Why Do I Keep Falling for the Monster?

— And Why I’m Totally Okay With It

Look, I know what this says about me.
I could go for the sunshine boy, the cinnamon roll, the emotionally available best friend with a stable job and a pet cat. But instead, I’m over here simping for the emotionally repressed, morally (dark-)grey, trauma-scarred half-demon with claws, commitment issues, and a body count.

Am I crazy?
I say no.

Monsters Are Hot. Let’s Start There.

There’s something about the monster — whether he’s a literal beast or just metaphorically feral — that hits deep. Not just „he’s dangerous“ hot (though, hi there), but that wounded, powerful, rage-against-the-world vibe that screams:
👉 I will destroy everything for you, but only you. 👈

And honestly? That’s hot.

The monster isn’t here to be nice. He’s not texting back in five minutes. He’s not bringing you daisies and smiling through a family dinner. Or even considering a family dinner that doesn’t consist of eating the family.
He’s showing up bloodstained and growling, “You’re mine,” like it’s a full-body confession.

And I eat that up.

He’s Broken, But Beautifully

Falling for the monster is really falling for the person who’s been hurt, twisted, scarred — and is still capable of love. That’s the fantasy. That despite everything — the fangs, the past sins, the fact that he probably drinks blood on Tuesdays — he still chooses you.

We don’t want a flawless hero. We want one who has every reason not to love, and does it anyway.

Because that kind of love? That’s earned.
That’s powerful.

Let’s Be Honest: We Relate

Sometimes the monster is just a metaphor for… us.

We’re messy. We’ve got baggage. We’ve been through some things. And seeing a character who’s considered unlovable — who believes they’re unlovable — get love anyway? That’s healing, in its own, muddled way.

So when we read about the warlock with a cursed soul finally letting someone touch him without flinching… yeah. That hits at the right spot.

Consent? Always. Teeth? Optional.

Now let me be clear — we’re talking fictional monsters here. The kind with claws but boundaries. Growls but green flags. The kind who’ll snarl “Don’t touch me,” while pulling you closer anyway.

In real life? We want respect, therapy, and background checks. We want a partner who knows the meaning of the little word „no“. Who won’t beat up someone just because they have a disagreement. Who has a stable job that doesn’t involve sniper guns, knives, or daily life-threatening danger.

In fiction? We want the chaos beast who says “I don’t deserve you” while laying waste to a city to keep you safe. That contrast — violence and vulnerability, danger and devotion — is intoxicating.

So… Why Do You Keep Falling for the Monster?

Maybe it’s the power.
Maybe it’s the pain.
Maybe it’s the dark part of your heart that just wants someone who sees all your shadows and says, “Good. Now show me more.”

Whatever the reason — welcome. You’re not alone.
We’re all here, hopelessly devoted to the fanged, horned, morally dubious love interests who’d burn the world just to keep us warm.

And honestly?

That is the best way to daydream.
